A machine health check (MHC) is important for maintaining the condition and performance of your equipment – and for protecting your investment in the long-run.

At JCB, we recommend an MHC is completed every time a trained dealer engineer carries out any form of service, maintenance, diagnostic or repair work on your machine.

An engineer will grade your machine’s components as RED (safety critical), AMBER (advisory), or GREEN (satisfactory), and give you a transparent view of any work needed to keep your machine operating safely.

THE BENEFITS OF JCB MACHINE HEALTH CHECKS

Even if your machine appears to look and perform healthily, you never know what’s going on beneath the surface without a professional opinion. That’s why there are many benefits to a JCB machine health check:

  • Efficiency: With a clear view of what work is required, you can plan ahead to ensure damaged or worn parts are replaced at the right time.
  • Machine health: You’ll be able to determine the exact condition of your machine, and avoid future repair costs.
  • Value: With preventative maintenance, you could increase the residual value of your machine.
  • Minimise downtime: You can replace and monitor any faults before they become serious problems.

MACHINE HEALTH CHECK STANDARDS

From Backhoe Loader checks to forklift checks, every health check is divided into 3 statuses:

RED ITEMS
A red status is assigned to a component when the damage compromises functionality and safety, therefore making it dangerous or potentially illegal to operate. These faults require urgent action, and your engineer will offer a solution.

AMBER ITEMS 
An amber status is given when components are below optimum condition, but not safety-critical like in the case of a red status. However, if these amber components are not addressed, they will become red statuses in the future.

GREEN ITEMS
Any components that are working as normal, with no compromise on machine performance, are given green status. A wear should stay as green status until the next service interval based on its current usage.

WHAT’S INVOLVED?

  • You or your dealer will book the job via a repair or service. An engineer will then be allocated, and an MHC is added to every job card.
  • During the MHC, your engineer will complete a walk around, using a checklist specific to your machine.
  • The machine is visually inspected and its operation is checked. This is when items are assigned RED, AMBER or GREEN status. If you receive any RED or AMBER statuses, the fault will be described with photos, videos, and an estimate of the repair time.
  • When complete, the final checklist will be submitted to depot staff to provide an all-inclusive quote for parts and labour time.
  • Your quote will be followed up by phone or online to discuss concerns, solutions, and payment.
  • You’ll then either authorise or decline the parts and work identified. The outcome is recorded and tracked for the future.
